Sun protection tips for everyone

Sun Protection for Everyone

The risk of overexposure to the sun is 365 days a year. Practice these sun protection basics all year round to give your skin the best chance of long term health.

Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher

  • This applies to all outdoor activities such as sports, shopping, picnics, walking, jogging, or gardening
  • Choose a sunscreen with ingredients that block both UVB and UVA rays
  • Apply liberally and evenly to all exposed skin
  • Be sure to cover “often missed spots” such as lips, ears, around eyes, neck, scalp, hands and feet
  • Reapply every two hours, more often with strenuous activity or water sports.
  • Choose a product that suits you from available products – gel, spray, cream, stick hypoallergenic, fragrance free, or those formulated especially for children

 Cover up

  • wear long sleeved shirts and long pants
  • tightly woven fabrics and dark colours offer better protection
  • a broad brimmed hat protects often exposed areas such as ears and necks
  • UV blocking sunglasses with wraparound or large frames protect your eyelids and the sensitive skin around your eyes
  • Sunglasses also can help reduce the risk of cataracts late in life.
  • use a SUN SHADE TENT

 What type of sunscreen

  • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen offering BOTH UVA AND UVB protection
  • Many aftershaves for men and moisturizers for women already have a sunscreen (usually SPF 15) and will protect casual exposure of a few minutes
  • If you work outside or spend a lot of time outdoor, you need a stronger water resistant sunscreen that combine different active chemical ingredients in order to provide broad spectrum protection.
  • Reapply every two hours, more often with strenuous activity or water sports.

***Remember that up to 40% of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation reaches the earth on a completely cloudy day.
