Vacationing with your pets can be extremely rewarding if you take the time to do some research in advance.
Vacationing with your pets can be extremely rewarding if you take the time to do some research in advance.
- Work backwards by first establishing if your resort or hotel will take pets.
- Are there any pet fees or deposits?
- Am I limited to certain rooms?
- Are there areas that I cant go with my pet?
- Inquire into whether they offer anything special for pets, some five star resorts offer pet walking, pet sitting etc. Just ask.
Before you go
-
PLAN AHEAD. Call the airlines and get specific information about requirements and charges.
-
Your pet may require a health certificate from your veterinarian before travelling. Check with the appropriate authorities to ensure that you comply with all regulations well in advance of your travel date.
-
If you intend to transport your pet in a kennel, choose one that is the appropriate size, one that is large enough for your pet to stand, lie down and turn around.
-
Acclimatize your pet to the kennel before travelling. Use of their favourite toy, blanket, treat etc. will make getting in and out easier. Try backing your pet into the kennel because instinctively they back up when they dont want to do something.
-
It is important that your pet have ID tags at all times which may include name, address, owners name, medical concerns. If driving, consider adding you license plate number or destination hotel telephone number.
-
Carry a picture and ID number of your pet.
On the Road.
-
Acclimatize your pet to travelling in the car.
-
Check that your air conditioning is functioning properly.
-
Keep plenty of fresh cool water available.
-
Use a sunshade on the windows.
-
Use a pet seat belt or a kennel to safely transport your pet. Dont allow it to stick its head out of the window.
-
Make use of frequent rest stops to water and relieve your pet, always on a leash.
-
NEVER leave your pet unattended in the car.
-
Before the trip, feed your pet lightly, about one third of the usual amount. Save the rest for the end of the road.
-
When travelling with cats, always make sure that their carrier is clean and fresh. Line the bottom of the carrier with newspaper. Then put in a blanket or towel. Letting it out in the car is acceptable when you are stopped in order to clean the carrier if necessary. If you must take the cat out of the car, USE A LEASH, they will immediately run away home.
-
Pets suffer from jet lag too. Try to keep their routine the same, active and in the sunlight.
